TOBY and I – first reading – English as a second language

TOBY and I – first reading – English as a second language

This whole past school year I have struggled between the desire to give my class (6-7 years old kids) the pleasure of reading in English, and between the unpleasant habit of the English words to be written in a different way than they are spoken.

BE READY!

BE READY!

It might seam a bit old-fashioned, but my strong advice is to ALWAYS prepare a detailed lesson plan for each of your lessons. Ideally, with one or two extra activities in case of unexpected spare time. This is an example of my lesson plan for

Everybody learns better and more if the lesson is CAPTIVATING and FUN.

Everybody learns better and more if the lesson is CAPTIVATING and FUN.

As much as it’s possible, I keep to the rule that to learn something one must find it interesting or captivating in some way. I usually teach small kids, but occasionally also teenagers and adults. Of course the approach to the student changes with the age. But, independently on the age, EVERYBODY learns better and more if the lesson is captivating and fun.

To make children study is similar to make them eat when they don’t want to. To make them sit at the table and place in front of them food which looks tasty and yummy, with you eating at the same table and smiling at them, makes the whole difference. It’s much more effective than just ordering them “now you must eat” with a strict voice and maybe shouting whenever they don’t eat or try to leave the table. It usually works!

The kids must have fun learning with you, but it does not mean that the teacher plays the role of a clown. There is time for fun and time to be serious. Kids must learn that you love them, you care for them, you have no problems to joke and laugh, but, when you tell them to do something, they are bound to obbey. You are their teacher, not their play companion. It might mean that you have to insist and raise your voice at times, but it is necessary. In 70-80% of cases, they will understand this. For the remaining 20% you have to try an individual approach. Sometimes you succeed, sometimes not. Just transmit to them that you love them and care for them and they will respect it when you ask them to abbandon the play for a while and concentrate on serious work. To set clear rules in the class will make your and their life easier and more pleasant. Kids find it naturally comforting to have rules to follow. But attention, the rules must not be too many!
